Semicircular is a musician/sound artist group in Taiwan, founded by Hsueh Yung-Chih and Cheng Wan-Chien in spring 2016. The duo became a trio in 2018 with the addition of Liu Fang-Yi. Featuring a system consisting of people, objects, electronics, sounds, experiments, and concepts, the group shows itself through expression between music and non-music domains. Combining improvisational performances with diverse media and the traits of different fields (languages, social issues, culture and others), it keeps its focus on the meaning and significance of everything as well as presents and transforms them through performances or in any other possible forms.
The harbor region of a city usually changes rapidly. Like an intertidal zone, it sees ongoing transformation and all kinds of change traces that have been left behind. The Port of Kaohsiung is set apart from other districts of the city by an even more noticeable juxtaposition and mingling of the old and the new.Sounds, which are always closely linked to their environments, can also serve as a means to understand Kaohsiung's harbor region.
As the members of Semicircular, we've observed the harbor region and the urban area around Pier-2 and recorded the characteristics and sound events of the environment. Sounds as well as the connections between things often hide under the surface; only via in-depth exploration and close listening can they be reached and found out. The Pier 2 artist-in-residence program offers us an opportunity to interact with local residents and elderly people and to gain a deep understanding of local life and memories/history. From local people's experiences and their different perspectives, we've found many things that are easily neglected and have been taken for granted.
